Canon Flash Memory Camcorders | Vixia HF10

The Canon Vixia HF10 is the top model in Canon’s HD flash camcorder line. Canon wasn’t the first to come out with a flash memory camcorder but they’ve quickly come out with one of the best flash memory camcorders from any maker. The Vixia is typically the top selling and top rated in the flash camcorder reviews at Amazon. The HF10 weighs 15 ounces – just a litle under a pound and is 3 by 2.5 by 5 inches, making it small enough to fit into a jacket pocket. It’s just a little bit smaller than it’s biggest competetor the Sony Handycam and much smaller than the hard drive Vixia. The Vixia HF10 has 16GB of built in flash memory and a slot to add an SDHC removable flash card. (The Vixia HF100 doesn’t have the built in memory). At the highest quality the HF10 can record about 2 hours and 5 minutes of video, and over 6 hours of video at the lowest quality.

You’ll need at least a class 4 SDHC card to record the best quality movies. It is optically stabilized, and has a 12x zoom lens. You can select aperture and shutty priority modes if you like that kind of control, and even change the frame rate. It has a mini-HDMI out to connect it directly to your TV along with mini headphone and microphone jacks and USB for downloading to computer. The battery lasts about 55 minutes of typical recording, you can also get a double capacity battery.

Vixia HF10 Video Quality

The video from the HF10 will be compressed, there’s no way around it considering the kind of card it uses. That means you’ll get a little bit of grainyness in low light conditions but the video will look great if well lit. Unfortunately that’s something you’ll have to deal with with a camcorder with flash memory. The Vixia does seem to be better than most flash card digital camcorders though, and reviewers mention it’s low light capability. One of the biggest comments in the Vixia HF10 reviews section of Amazon is how great the video looks. The camera comes with video editing software, or you can use the software you have if it can handle the AVCHD format. If you have a Mac, only the Intel based Macs can handle that format. The really nice part is not having to worry about playing a whole tape back to get your video downloaded to you computer. The download time with flash is so much quicker. The Amazon reviews for the Canon Vixia have been overwhelmingly postive making this the best high definition flash camcorder.
