Welcome to Flash Memory Camcorder Reviews and Information

The new trend in digital video camcorders are camcorders with flash memory.  Recent advances in technology have made memory cheaper, it’s getting to the point where they can compete with tape camcorders in both price and quality.  In the category of  tapeless camcorders are DVD and hard drive camcorders.  The DVD camcorders record directly to a mini DVD, the hard drive camcorders have a miniature hard drive built in.  When you’re talking about flash memory vs hard drive camcorders, the flash camcorders have the advantage in lightness, removable media, and ruggedness.  The hard drive camcorders tend to have the advantage in price and storage size but that is changing as memory prices drop, and they’re about equal in video quality.  The biggest advantage of DVD camcorders is the ability to take your DVD right out of the camera and put it into a DVD player and view it.  If you’re not worried about editing your video then it might be a good option for you, but with the advent of so many cheap video editing programs it’s something that can be done very easily, so why not do it?  Tape models, like the mini DV camcorder are quickly losing their status as the standard in the digital video world.  The tape mechanism is delicate and prone to jams, plus you lose the benefit of random access.  If you want to upload a scene to your computer then you have to fast forward or rewind to find it on the tape, opposed to just locating the video clip on your flash drive.

HD Flash Memory Camcorders

The big advantage that the flash memory digital camcorders have is their  lightness, they have removable media, the media is relatively cheap, and their are no working parts to wear out.  You don’t have to worry about a tape mechanism breaking, or the tape degrading over time.  If you’re looking for high quality you can find that too. Almost all of the major manufacturers have a hd flash memory camcorder, if high definition is what you’re looking for.  I predict as time goes on all camcorders will be high definition.  All television broadcasting is moving towards it anyway, it standard definition will probably be like black and white T.V. The HD models will cost more than the standard definition camcorder models, obviously, but again as time goes on prices are likely to drop, especially as new models are introduced.

Size and Ease of Use

Many of the flash memory camcorders are under $200.  Their are quite a few that are about the size of a deck of cards with one button recording and automatic uploading to video sharing services like YouTube and Photobucket.  They don’t have a host of features like optical zoom, but they make up for it with ease of use.  Many of them have flip out USB ports built in, you plug the whole camera into your computer and the software takes care of the rest.   Some of them even are charged through the USB port so while you’re uploading, they’re charging.  It might be better to go with one that uses standard batteries though, that way you’ll always be able to get power if you need it.
