High Definition Camcorders
If you’re in the market for a high-definition digital camcorder then you’ve probably taken a look at the models offered by Sony and Canon. Sony was one of the first manufacturers of high definition minidv camcorders back in 2003. Since then most manufacturers offer a high definition model, and following the recent trend of moving towards tapeless camcorders are also offering high definition models with flash memory or hard drive recording.
High Definition or HD (confusing because it can also mean Hard Drive) is a definition with sort of confusing meanings. Basically it means anything higher resolution than standard definition. Well, obviously – but their are different kinds of high-definition. Technically it has do with the number of lines in the vertical resolution and horizontal resolution. High Definition Television (HDTV) resolution is 1080 or 720 lines compared to standard definition which is 480 or 576 scan lines. The frame rate is also higher 60 frames per second. The screen ratio is 16:9 meaning the screen is 16 units wide and 9 units tall.
AVCHD is a format used for tapeless high definition video camcorders. It’s a standard developed by Panasonic and Sony. It’s used in Hard Drive camcorders and flash memory camcorders. In a high definition camcorder comparison, high definition hard drive camcorder are cheaper per byte of storage, but they are more delicate, less resistant to shocks and drops, and sometimes won’t even work above certain altitudes. The flash memory cameras are a little more expensive per byte of storage but have the advantage of no moving parts.
What this means to you when buying a high definition digital video camcorder is look and see what kind of high definition format it uses and if it’s compatible with your computer software if you want to edit it. Not all high definition camcorders are the same so do your homework before buying.
